Inhibitors of nucleic acid synthesis

Numerous antimicrobial agents that selectively interfere with the functions of DNA and RNA have been discovered, despite the universality of nucleic acid as the basis of life. Some of these, like the sulphonamides and diaminopyrimidines, have an indirect effect by interrupting metabolic pathways that lead to the manufacture of nucleic acids; others, like quinolones and nitroimidazoles, exert a direct action.
