Carbapenem

This class of b-lactam antibiotics is characterized by broad spectrum of activity, with high activity against nearly all Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria other than intracellular bacteria such as chlamydiae, and resistance to b-lactamases.

Very recently a number of b-lactamases able to hydrolyze the b-lactam ring of carbapenem have emerged and are undermining their efficacy. In particular Class A b-lactamases like KPC-2 and KPC-3 (Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemases), Oxa-48 (Oxacillin b-lactamase) and NDM-1 (New-Dehli metallo betalactamase) are growing quite rapidly.

It includes the following compounds: Biapenem, Ertapenem, Doripenem, Imipenem, Meropenem, Panipenem.
